Dating back to the 2nd century BCE, the mausoleum was built as the tomb of a Numidian prince. It stands 21 meters tall and rises over three richly decorated levels. Its architecture blends Ionic and Aeolic columns inspired by Greek design with Egyptian elements like a gorge cornice, offering a unique example of cultural synthesis.
The mausoleum is renowned for having borne a bilingual inscription in Libyco and Punic, removed in 1842 by British consul Thomas Reade. Now housed at the British Museum, this inscription enabled the deciphering of the Libyco alphabet and revealed the names of the architects and craftsmen involved, while contributing to research on the tomb’s intended recipient.
Following the removal of the inscription, the mausoleum suffered significant damage. A major restoration campaign led by French archaeologist Louis Poinssot between 1908 and 1910 reconstructed the monument using historical documents and recovered fragments found on site.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 as part of Dougga, the mausoleum is a valuable testament to royal Numidian funerary architecture. It reflects the convergence of Numidian, Punic, and Hellenistic cultures and serves as a key reference for understanding Tunisia’s ancient past.
Blending history, architecture, and cultural discovery, the Dougga mausoleum offers visitors a unique experience.
