A Strategic and Iconic Military Site

The Mareth Line stretches 45 kilometers between the Mediterranean and the Matmata Mountains. Originally designed to protect Tunisia from a potential Italian invasion from Libya, it included forty infantry bunkers and eight artillery fortifications. Its massive bunkers and trenches still reflect French military strategy and the fierce battles of 1943.

The Battle of Mareth: A WWII Turning Point

In March 1943, the Battle of the Mareth Line pitted Axis forces against the British 8th Army under General Montgomery. After intense fighting, the Allies broke through the line, marking a decisive moment in the Tunisia Campaign. Today, the site remains a place steeped in history—a symbol of courage and resistance.

The Mareth Line Military Museum

Near Mareth, a military museum recounts the history of the battle. Visitors can explore detailed battle maps, remnants of bunkers, artillery, and other artifacts. Accessible trenches and fortifications offer a full immersion into the region’s military history.
